Preocupación y pesar reina entre médicos del hospital Infantil Robert Reid Cabral que atienden a un niño de cuatro años que padece de rabia humana, una enfermedad mortal, tras ser mordido en la cara por un perro en noviembre pasado, y no haber recibido la atención de salud adecuada en ese momento, a pesar de que su madre acudió de inmediato al hospital.
El niño es procedente de la comunidad Madre Vieja, San Cristóbal, provincia donde en octubre pasado se registró otro caso de rabia humana que terminó con la vida de una niña de seis años, de Cambita. Actualmente, el niño se encuentra en un estado de coma inducido, en la unidad de cuidados intensivos del centro asistencial.
El infectólogo Jesús Feris Iglesias, jefe del Servicio de Infectología del hospital, dijo que debe haber una alerta en el país, ya que ese solo caso representa una epidemia, y consideró urgente que las autoridades inicien una campaña masiva de vacunación de perros y gatos callejeros a nivel nacional.
